Manufacturing describes any industry that uses machines, tools or labor to make products from raw materials on a fairly large scale. Some of the most important manufacturing industries include those that produce automobiles, chemicals,clothing, computers, consumer electronics, heavy machinery, steel, tools, etc. Manufacturing industry has a crucial role in the U.S. economy, as it is a vital source of jobs, innovation and wealth. It employs almost 13 million people in the States and drives more innovation than any other business.

History of Manufacturing

The history of manufacturing in the U.S. is closely tied to historical changes in society and economy, the growth of the country and the development of its relations with other countries. Along with these changes came the need for more mature and systematic manufacturing process. During the long period of colonial America, manufacturing was developing in a slow pace since it was discouraged by England’s restrictive policy, having less importance than other industries in the country. Before the American Revolution, the economy was majorly based on agriculture and the market for manufacturing was almost nonexistent. During that period, the American colonies were only allowed to trade with England and to ship their products on English ships.
