Phoenix

Basic information

The city of Phoenix is the capital and the largest city of the U.S. state of Arizona and the fifth most populous city in the United States. It is the anchor of the Phoenix metropolitan area (also known as The Valley of the Sun) and Maricopa County. Located in the northeastern reaches of the Sonoran Desert, Phoenix has the hottest climate of any major city in the U.S. The average temperatures are over100°F (38°C). Phoenix is home to 1 567 925 residents.

City History

Native American Period

This part of the city history is very important since today’s Arizona Canal, Central Arizona Project Canal and the Hayden-Rhodes Aqueduct have origins in the irrigation canals which were created by Hohokam people who used to live here 2000 years ago.
