Basic information

Jacksonville is the largest city in the U.S. state of Florida and the county seat of Duval County. It is also the principal city in the Greater Jacksonville Metropolitan Area.

The city is located in the First Coast region of northeast Florida and is centered on the banks of theĀ St. John’s River.


The original settlement of what is today Jacksonville was founded in 1791. as Crowford and that name came from its location-a narrow point in the river where cattle once crossed. Crowford became Jacksonville in 1822. after the United States acquired the colony of Florida from Spain. Miami is a major coastal city in southeastern Florida and the county seat of Miami-Dade County, the most populous county in Florida. Miami has around 430 000 residents which makes it the largest city within the Miami metropolitan area, while the area itself has a population of over 5,4 million inhabitants.
