Detroit is the largest city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the seat of Wayne County. It is a major port city on the Detroit River, in the Midwest region of the U.S.
Detroit was founded on July 24, 1701. by the Frenchman Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac. The name comes from the French word détroit which means strait, characterizing its location on the river connecting the Great Lakes.
Detroit is the metonym for the American automobile industry, since it is known as the world’s traditional automotive center, and some of the city’s nicknames have this kind of origin- The Motor City and Motown. Detroit is also an important source of popular music legacies and after the Kiss song Detroit Rock City, the city got its nickname Rock City.
Other popular nicknames are City of Champions (because of sport successes in 1931), Arsenal of democracy (during World War II), The D, D-town, Hockeytown and The3-1-3 (its telephone area code). Continue reading Detroit
