Basic information
Charlotte is the largest city in the state of North Carolina and the seat of the Mecklenburg County. It is the 18th largest city in the USA with 687 456 «Charlotteans». The entire Charlotte Metropolitan Area has 1 701 799 residents. The 56% of city’s population are White Americans, 33,7% African Americans, Hispanics made up 10,6%, Asian Americans 4% and American Indians just 0,4%.
The city is located on the foothills of the Appalachian mountains, a couple of hours (by car) from the Atlantic Ocean.
Charlotte is named after the German Princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg, who had become the queen consort of British King George III the year before the city was founded. The town name was chosen in hopes of winning favor with the crown, but tensions between the United Kingdom and Charlotte Town grew as King George imposed unpopular laws on the citizens in response to the town people’s desire for independence.That is also the origin of city’s nickname-the Queen City.
