Memphis

Basic information

Memphis is a city in the southwest of the U.S. state of Tennessee, and it is a county seat of Shelby County. The city is located by the Mississippi River.

Demography and Religion

Memphis is a city of 669 651 residents and a largest city in Tennessee. The greater Memphis Metropolitan area, which includes adjacent counties in Mississippi and Arkansas, has a population of 1 289 533. Memphis is the second metropolitan area in Tennessee, behind Nashville. The Memphis region is often called Mid-South.

Most of the city population is Black or African American – 62,3%, 30,2% are White, 4,6% Hispanics and Latinos, and here also lives a small number of American Indians (0,2%), Asian Americans (1,6%), Pacific Islander Americans (0,1%) while the rest of population are some other races.

Since its founding Memphis had been home to people of many different religions. In 1870. here existed buildings of Baptist, Catholic, Episcopal, Methodist, Presbyterian, Congregational, Christian and a Jewish denominations.
