This April many Americans will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the first Earth Day. This holiday is designed to inspire awareness and appreciation for our environment. It reminds us of the importance of our planet and nature we are living in. Also, this is a great reminder of all the benefits that respectful relation with our environment brings to the nature, but to all of us as well. It is estimated that over 200 million people in 150 countries will participate this year. Earth Day is as significant in 2010. as it was a 40 years ago. Different manifestations, competitions, gathering and celebrations will be held in many cities. Join them. Feel the green spirit.

Formally the District of Columbia and commonly referred to as Washington, the District, or simply D.C, is the capital of the United States, founded on July 16. 1790. The city was originally a separate municipality within the Territory of Columbia until an act of Congress in 1871. effectively merged the City and the Territory into a single entity called the District of Columbia. That’s why the city is known as Washington D.C.
The city is located on the north bank of the Potomac River and is bordered by the states of Virginia to the southwest and Maryland to the other side.
The District has a resident population of 591 833, however, because of commuters from the surrounding suburbs, its population rises to over one million during the workweek.
